Tokyo, Japan—On November 19, Edelman CEO Richard Edelman will join GLOBIS CEO Yoshito Hori at GLOBIS University’s Tokyo Campus for a hybrid seminar. Mr. Edelman will present data to explore Japan’s low trust enigma, then join a discussion with Mr. Hori and answer questions from the audience.

Event description
Japan is widely revered as a paragon of efficiency, stability, and civility. This perception is reinforced by a wide number of globally recognized measures of success: It is the third largest economy in the world, it ranks at the top of education and public health measures, and it offers citizens a consistently high quality of life.

Despite this, Japan ranks near the bottom of Edelman’s Global Trust Barometer index year after year. Japanese respondents rank four major sectors (business, government, NGOs, and the media) as distrusted. This is a notable contrast to ratings in other countries.

Why is trust so low in Japan, and what is required for meaningful change? If Japan does so well on other global metrics, does this score matter? Edelman suggests that trust is the ultimate currency. So how can leaders and institutions earn trust domestically and overseas?
