17 Graduates, 8 Countries: GLOBIS University’s 2021 Full-Time English MBA Graduation Ceremony
Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo–GLOBIS University held its annual graduation ceremony for the 2021 Full-time English MBA Program on August 22. All 17 graduating students attended the ceremony in person, while family and guests joined remotely.
While delivering his commencement speech, GLOBIS University President and Founder Yoshito Hori said, “There is no right answer to your kokorozashi*. You may never know which mission is right for you until the end. However, the most important thing of all is to keep pursuing your personal mission. This will set the direction of your life and give you the power to confront adversity.
Izumi Monica Gutierrez Kumazawa, a graduate from Mexico, spoke about the resilience it took when deciding to study during a global pandemic in her speech;
“In the midst of the crisis, we looked for our own future, we did not allow anything or anyone to decide for us. We were brave enough to seize the opportunity. So, because of all of this, today I am proud to say that if I could add something to everyone’s strengths, it would be decisiveness and resilience. Everyone here has already proven that they have what it takes to be successful, to fulfill our own kokorozashi.”
Another graduate, Micho Oquindo Santillan, from the Philippines, noted the importance of being a leader with the future in mind;
“Through this experience, we learned the importance that an MBA education plays in becoming visionary leaders who can create and innovate societies. As leaders, we can’t afford to just stand still and wait until the world stabilizes and shifts to a new normal whenever a tragedy or disaster happens. Something must be done, not just to continue the business operations nor for profits, but for the sake of the world. More than ever, our world needs more ambitious and passionate leaders who can think critically and systematically to solve its haunting and pressing problems.”
The GLOBIS MBA in English was launched with the Part-time MBA Program in 2009, followed by the Full-time MBA Program in 2012. Since then, a total of 584 students have graduated. With more than 90% of students coming from outside of Japan, the GLOBIS Full-time MBA offers a truly global study experience. This year’s graduates come from eight countries: Indonesia, Mexico, Mozambique, Panama, the Philippines, Spain, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, GLOBIS University has taken steps to ensure the safety of students and faculty members. On March 2, 2020, all classes were moved online–a relatively seamless transition, thanks to years of experience with online teaching. Classes are currently operating both online and in person, in accordance with the Japanese Government’s recommendations for academic institutions.
GLOBIS has also involved students in the decision-making process concerning COVID-19 measures, mainly through online meetings with student representatives to assess needs. One-on-one consultation sessions ensured no lost learning opportunities.
